Last week’s 2025 TPM Conference in Long Beach California saw industry leaders discussing the looming challenges facing global trade and logistics.
One of the key developments was the proposed US port tax on China-built containerships, which could add $1,000 per TEU to shipping costs, translating into an industry-wide impact of $20 billion. For shippers who rely on the Transpacific and Transatlantic trade lanes, this will significantly affect the unit economics of moving goods from China to the U.S.
The familiar spectre of port congestion remains a major challenge, with investments in infrastructure for port efficiency mooted to play a key role in having a competitive and efficient network.
Another takeaway was that the Gemini Cooperation, which is aiming for 90% performance levels is likely to obtain this after three full cycles. However, all carriers remain prepared to deploy blank sailings to control capacity where necessary to achieve schedule reliability.
After a long period of avoiding it, carriers were also discussing the gradual shift back to the Suez Canal, but the transition will have to be carefully managed by shipping lines to avoid market volatility. It’s clear that a realignment will temporarily cause congestion, a dip in demand for Europe-bound cargo, and rate fluctuations over the next two quarters, with further capacity withdrawals likely to maintain price stability.
For 2025, carrier priorities will revolve around building network efficiency and increasing market share. As the alliances push for market share in an uncertain world, offering certainty may be the best product.
